BEFORE
he began making, Alistair Hawtin collected pots for many years.
His main influences are the quiet, subtle pots of the Chinese Sung
Dynasty, Korean pots of the Choson Dynasty AD 1500 to 1900 and European
pots from medieval times to the 17th century.
He
makes reduction fired pots for his own pleasure, and in the hope
that others may enjoy them too. Many are in pale colours, understated
and quiet. He does not feel that pots need to make a loud noise
to be noticed and he is more concerned with the quiet message they
send through their subtle greens, blues and browns and through the
way they feel and look; sensuous, curved and tactile. Like many
potters and collectors he thinks that the feel of a pot communicates
more than any other aspect.
A recent
trip to Korea and Japan with fellow potter Phil Rogers has been
a big influence.
Alistair's
pots are reduction fired using a gas fired kiln.
