The Leach Pottery 1951
Tall Tenmoku Glazed Jug

This is a fine example of a jug that was designed by Bernard Leach especially for The Festival of Britain which took place on the South Bank London to celebrate all things British. The jug based as it is on English mediaeval form illustrates perfectly Bernard's fusion of East & West. An English earthenware jug form made in stoneware and glazed in the classic Oriental high fired iron rich glaze known as Tenmoku. This example with it date boss 1951 was probably made to exhibit and sell in the British Crafts Pavilion. The jug was possibly thrown by David Leach. Impressed with SI mark of the Leach Pottery, St.Ives.
