Yeap Poh Chap 1927 -
Plate, Made in 1980, Ewhurst, Surrey, England.
Porcelain, Celadon glaze with iron brush work. Signed on the reverse in engraved script, Yeap.
Diam.28.0 cm.

Yeap Poh Chap emulated some of the most attractive classic oriental glazes including imperial yellow, peachbloom and tenmoku, his pattern making as on this example plate has a genuine spontaneity, while being totally under control. His pots have the look and feel of the Sung Dynasty, but on looking closer one sees that they are a very contemporary interpretation of the period.

Blanc de Chine Guanyin
Figure, 18th Century, Fujian (dehua) China.

Porcelain, glazed in a very clear glaze.
H. 41.0.cm.

These figures of Buddhist deity's were made at Fujian ( dehua ) for over five hundred years. The most common was Guanyin goddess of mercy. Many were exported to Europe examples can be seen in some of the great country houses of England such as Chatsworth and Burley.
The figures were made in moulds with hands and heads made separately and attached in the finishing process. The glaze made with the same clay as the body is one of the most perfect fit's of any glaze, with no sign of crazing. For me these figures have immense presence and dignity.
