Peter
Swanson
Stoneware box, 2004
Celadon glaze.
Impressed with personal seal.
H 12.0cm Ø 15.0 cm
This a large impressive lidded box, simple in design and glazed
in a thick and fatty celadon glaze has a real feeling of the Song
Dynasty about it. The subtle indents both on the lid and body just
add enough decoration to enhance and make for a wonderful box with
great presence. A real delight.

Bernard
Leach 1987 - 1979
Lidded Box. Made in St
Ives in the mid 60's
Stoneware, glazed in a speckled olive green glaze.
Impressed St Ives seal and BL to inside of the turned foot-ring.
H. 10.0.cm Ø 12.0 cm.
The clay from which this lidded box is made came from Stourbridge
in the West Midlands, the clay contained iron particles which bled
into the glaze, creating the speckled effect. Bernard often used
this clay with a blue/grey glaze, another example of which can be
seen in The Art of Bernard Leach by Carol Hogben.( plate
91) a large bottle vase with grass decoration. A similar pot to
this one, but made of porcelain and glazed in a celadon was owned
by Lucie Rie and can be seen in the exhibition catalogue that accompanied
an exhibition at the Ohara Museum of Art 1980. (exhibit 123)
