These covered pots were made to hold incense. The shape evolved over many years from the sight of tiny rice-straw stacks which border the paddy fields of Japan in the Autumn and Winter .

This a large impressive lidded box, simple in design but because of it's size a most dramatic and strong piece. The lid is impressed with rope marks and shell scars which form a dramatic pattern.
