Peter Swanson solo exhibitions
are rare preferring as he does to show small only selections of
his work at any one time. So it's with great pleasure that oakwood
bring you a Solo Exhibition by this great potter.
Peter's style is set
very much in the Leach Oriental Tradition, using glazes made with
local ground stone dust, clays and most importantly wood ash. Peter's
work has always been strong, however in the last couple of years
his work has matured with a softness appearing and with his continuing
experimentation with wood ash and clays his pots and glazes develop.
Like many potters of his generation he has traveled to see and learn
from potters and pots made in other cultures. Last year he traveled
extensively in Japan, a trip which I feel has produced subtle and
profound changes in his work and working practice.
In addition to gas fired
reduced stoneware Peter also fires in a anagama type kiln, so it
should come as no surprise that one of his destinations in Japan
was the Shigaraki region. There will be some anagama pieces in this
exhibition.
