Peter
Starkey attended the very innovative ceramics
course at Harrow in the early 70's some of his fellows included
Walter Keeler and Colin Pearson. The Harrow course at this time
was an hot house of ideas and was fundamental in the the further
development of studio ceramics after Leach.
Peter was in charge of the Dartington Pottery Training Workshop
from 1975 -79. This project was an attempt to produce functional
pottery for every day use. Though the project turned out to be fundamentally
flawed it never the less produced in my opinion some of the highest
quality pottery produced by hand in a workshop environment. Among
the many potters that worked on this project were Stephen Parry,
Colin Kellam, Joe Finch, Peter Cook and Steve Course.
After Peter Starkey left the DPTW he was Course Director B.A. (Hons)
Ceramics, School of Art & Design, University of Wales Institute,
Cardiff 1979 - 2003 one of the most influential ceramics courses
in Great Britain. Peter Starkey along with Walter Keeler was an
early practioner of salt glazing, his work is very distinctive and
is in many public and private collections.
