Bill Marshall
William Marshall was born in St.Ives in 1923. He was the first apprentice to be taken on in 1938 by David Leach. He was 14 years old and came from a local school.
Bill is a superb thrower, he worked at the Leach Pottery from 1938 until 1977. While at the Leach Pottery he was Forman and the teacher to many of the students that passed through. In the later part of Bernard Leach's career Bill was Leach's hands throwing many of Leach's major pieces with Leach finishing the final details of foot, rim and decoration.
In 1977 he set up his own pottery in Lelant, near St.Ives making his own distinctive pots. Bill Marshall is admired by many and his pots are expressive and are full of vitality and life.
