Shoji Hamada (1894-1978) the most celebrated Japanese artist potter and along with his close friend Bernard Leach one of the most influential artist potter's of the 20th century. To quote from Bernard Leach 'his pots are a living expression of the man himself'

MISUZASHI
A misuzashi (water jar) by Shoji Hamada, grey crawling glaze. Four paddled panels with iron wash and two panels with broken stem leaf pattern. This a a wonderful and pure Japanese tea ceremony piece. Signed box by Shoji Hamada signed lid with a broken stem motif rather than the more usual chop. (see detail)

Signature and broken cane detail from the kabako lid.

BOWL:
A very good large bowl by Hamada, classic form, glaze and decoration. Looking for a signature piece by Hamada then look no further. Signed kabako by Shinsaku Hamada confirming that this bowl is by his father Shoji Hamada. The inscription reads Shoji Hamada made, and his also signed by Shinsaku Hamada.
