The
Oakwood Gallery
was founded in 1999 by husband and wife team David & Ausma Binch.
Although only opening a gallery in 1999 David & Ausma's interest
in pottery and potters goes back over thirty years.
The gallery was situated in the picturesque North Nottinghamshire
village of Edwinstowe. From the very beginning the gallery exhibited
mainly work by a group of potters that were making pottery in or
after the Oriental tradition of stoneware. The ethos of the gallery
was firmly founded in the Leach Tradition. Some of the potters whose
work was shown were Richard Batterham, John Leach, Phil Rogers,
Mike Dodd, Jim Malone and Edward Hughes to name but a few.
David Binch is an authority on the works of Bernard Leach and Shoji
Hamada, and is a member of the advisory group of the Leach Pottery
Restoration Project.

Many pieces selected
and sold by The Oakwood Gallery are to be found in public collections.
We are particularly proud that the late Bill Ismay bought a piece
by Jim Malone at his Solo Exhibition, sadly this was to be his final
acquisition. The hakame decorated bottle vase can be seen in the
Ismay Collection at the York City Art Gallery were it is on display
with other pots from Bill Ismay's collection and is a fitting memorial
to a great and loyal supporter of Contemporary Ceramics. More recently
we have provided a Teapot by Jane Hamlyn to the Kamm Teapot Museum
in Sparta, USA.
Since
the summer of 2004 The Oakwood Gallery has
been solely an online gallery. However in 2006 we
again started an exhibition programme at The Thoresby
Gallery, full details of which can be found by using the Exhibitions
link and the top of this page.
